Due to the U11 music bug, we're going to postpone Weatherstock. From what I understand, there is a good possibility that there will be a fix for this bug by June 15th. However, that's not a guarantee, so the following changes in schedule are in effect.
1) Ministock is moved to June 15th, the original Weatherstock date. If the U11 music bug fix is not on live, we will host it on Bullroarer!

Exclusive Licenses - Good For Companies, but Bad for Players?

Given our recent discussion about which other companies we'd prefer to see take over LOTRO, I started wondering: why should we be satisfied with any one single company making a Middle Earth MMO?

I think that exclusive licenses - while good for the companies that hold them - are ultimately bad for players/customers.

I recall about 12-14 years ago when EA Sports' Madden franchise (NFL game) was being really pushed by (I believe) the 2K Sports NFL games. At the time, the NFL and NFLPA (NFL players' association) licensed their products to multiple companies. The 2K Sports NFL games were cheaper than the Madden games, and were starting to offer better and more innovative gameplay, whereas the Madden franchise had become kind of stale.

In response, EA Sports didn't try to improve the Madden games. Instead, it signed an exclusive license with the NFL and NFLPA, which pretty much killed all football game competition (nobody wants to play as "QB 12" on a generic Boston football team instead of as Tom Brady on the New England Patriots).

EA Sports still has that exclusive license, and so you can buy a new Madden game each year that is basically just a $60 lineup update and little else. If 2k Sports and other companies were still allowed to make NFL games, I think that Madden would be better for it - or would have folded entirely, if it were surpassed by superior games.

As this relates to LOTRO, I wonder if a large part of the reason for LOTRO's stagnation and decline is because it really doesn't have any competition. It's not in the "Fantasy MMO" market like WoW or Rift; it's in the LOTR MMO market, and is the only participant in that market. Will the same thing happen to SWTOR, since it's the only Star Wars MMO? (Some might argue that it already has, I'm sure.)

I know that licensors* are free to restrict the usage of their licenses as they see fit. If SZC only wants to license one LOTR MMO, that's its right. I understand that companies may be unlikely to invest large amounts of money in a product without a guarantee that their product will dominate the market (the discussion about how this is pretty much the opposite of what the intent of capitalism is we can save for another day, although perhaps it's this very discussion - that companies no longer engage in risk-taking but rather attempt to engineer/secure success prior to investment - that is the key to why exclusive licenses exist).

However, I think that it would ultimately benefit us all if we truly had a choice as to which LOTR MMO to play. If company X puts out a worse and worse product, we can jump ship to company Y until its game falls apart, then move on to company Z. Ideally, one of those companies would consistently produce the best LOTR product and most of us would end up there, but who knows.

*(Please add 'licensors' to the spell-check for this site. It's a real word, damn it. )

When I first started working here I was told that my opinion of myself as a 'casual' player was laughable (they did actually laugh). Because I raided 3x a week, did a LOT of community related things, was online more than 40 hours a week and provided a good deal of bug reports, feedback, and other things (and this is partly how I got hired). Their definition of me was as hardcore as they came, but mine was casual. So labels don't really do much to explain how people really play or how the percieve their own play time.

Opinions on U11

So U11 rolled out and also rolled into the code like a bowling ball into pins. We all know about the absolute mess that came with its launch and other technical problems (lag, game freezes, client crashes, inability to patch and launcher failures) but what is U11 actually like? Well, here's my take.

Landscape

It's what most will expect when they hear a new snowy region: its some fields covered in snow with a snowy part of Fangorn for good measure.

Fangorn was actually the best bit about RoR yet this time it seems worse. It just feels too cluttered and too mob filled. I hated trying to complete the explorer deeds in there because you just can't see where you're going, what you're currently stuck on or what mob is hitting you. It's just a clusterfuck more than a voyage through a frozen, ancient, grumpy forest (sounds like a description of a certain old lady's downstairs).

I did like the edges of the new map. Standing in the northern, mountainous regions, you can see the statue in Great River from there. I love seeing that. And on the east, you can see all of the Wold. And the south lets you sit on top of those cliffs above Cliving and look across the plains. Honestly, the edges are probably the best bits of the landscape, just for the views.

And no, it wasn't five areas as Turbine claimed. It's one small zone. Their deception is getting too much.

Quests

Well, I only got up to the Cuthbards (sp?) farm quest, which was so badly bugged it had to be closed and now prevents people progressing through the zone. However, the few quests I did do weren't anything to brag about. Every single one was unoriginal, uninspired and boring. 'Kill x of these' and 'collect x of that'. Nothing new.

Book

I sighed. A big sigh. One of the least interesting books I've ever completed. A lot of running back and forth, talking to NPCs who are standing next to each other and some gathering/killing objectives. The instances were also pretty boring, save the new boss (I'll come to him in a bit). Even the end was underwhelming.

However, they at least made Session Plays optional. Hooray! I hated them and love that they were just a choice, not a requirement. One of the few good points of this update.

Warbands

Seems they at least listened. The newest boss Warbands aren't soloable (not yet, at least). They require you to actually group up for them or hope that a group is already working on it so you can just tag along. There's about 3 of these and they're pretty much just Bugud: kill the adds and then nuke the boss. Nothing too hard in an average group.

Nurzum

You know what? I actually like this idea. A giant that was warped and twisted using a piece of Thangorodrim found by Saruman. It's something new and different to the usual mobs. I like his size, his appearance (even if he does look like a cross between a Wood-troll and an Ice-wight on steroids) and I like the idea that he carries a blizzard with him like the Ringwraiths carry dread.

But something about him bugs me. As far as I can tell, he's restricted to those book instances. I've done all the explorer deeds and I've checked in-game chat but I can't find him out on the landscape. From the Wildermore dev video, it seemed like he would be this relentless, roaming force of destruction just wandering around Wildermore, smashing anything in his way. You'd see the screen get icy and you'd know Nurzum was near. Yet he isn't anywhere to be found. Was this just bad advertising or am I missing something?

Loot

Not much improvement. There are probably a handful of new items for each class that are any good and even these require grinding with Survivors to get (not that many will be able to do that till the quest fix). They also seemed to reduce the seal cost for FAs in the Skirm camp... if only I could find a competent group to complete Smaug T1 with!

The New Hytbolds

From what I've heard from people who managed to complete the bugged quest before it was so brilliantly shutdown, there are 2 new Hytbolds. You do 5 quests per day, getting 5 gold tokens per quest. It apparently takes a little over 3 weeks to get full Kindred with Survivors, without any speed ups. But then you still need 110 gold tokens per new bracelet... and that's not even including the new pockets or other loot.

I don't know anything else about it, really, since I'm limited by the damn bugged quest. If anyone has any better info, please feel free to share it.

Mounted Combat

Same as ever: Nascar on ice. The lag makes it impossible to navigate anything but a completely empty field (woe betide you if there's a branch or rock on the ground) and the rubberbanding is even worse. I spent almost a minute running south from Forlaw, only to find myself hurtling backwards at near the speed of sound before being lodged inbetween a lamp and a fence.

Interface

Nope. Don't like it. I've had to move my connection status panel because it no longer fits snugly in the left side of the screen. Not to mention I can't hide the Hobbit Slotmachine alert.

And then there's the annoying alert telling me that I have alerts. Whose stupid idea was that? It seems people are just playing the 'please don't fire me, I actually do things' game and it just results in shit like this. I have a god damn alert display for a reason!

Hobbit Presents

... I...

... Really?

Seriously, this is what happens when you hire douchebags from companies like Zynga. They make shitty games with nothing but popups asking for money and so that's what we got. We now have gambling in LotRO, a game with an age rating of 13+. 'Pay money and possibly win a prize!'.

And not only that but the prizes are actually better in some cases than end-game loot! And some of the prizes aren't even available in-game.

All in all, it wasn't a very good zone. Poorly implemented, poorly filled and poorly designed. And this is supposed to keep people busy until the coming fall, when I'm sure the next expansion will be set to be delayed.

"Are you feeling lucky? A new Fortune Wheel feature in FarmVille will give you a chance to test that luck through a slot machine mechanic. When you login to the game, you'll see the Fortune Machine on the right side of your gameplay area, and can click on it to see how many free spins you've received.

Just hit the big green Spin button and you'll see the wheels begin to turn. The items can be anything from animals and trees to experience point boosts and more,

While you can feel free to stop playing with the Fortune Wheel entirely after you've run out of free spins, you can also use coins - yes, coins - to keep spinning the wheel after that. It also looks like you'll only have a single chance at playing on the Fortune Wheel, as refreshing the game causes it to disappear. This could end up being a weekly event, or even a daily one, but for now, you'll just need to keep an eye out on the right side of your farm to see when (if ever) the Fortune Wheel will come back around. Good luck winning some great items!"

Weatherstock V Under Threat

Is Turbine eliminating the store and in-game currency?

It seems that Turbine is in a rush to convert everything over to Mithril Coins and stick items in-game that use said Mithril Coins.

First, it was the introduction of Mithril Coins and the ability to use them for Swift Travel, to teleport, reset daily festival/anniversary quests, revive or purchase outfits (all which used to be purchasable through the store).

Then, with update 11, you can now reset your daily tasks, accelerate your reputation, accelerate your deeds and do armor and weapons repairs. Again, all items used to be purchasable in the store.

It seems that Turbine is moving a lot of the stuff you could normally purchase in the store over to Mithril Coins and making them purchasable in-game (and I haven't done the math yet, but I am willing to bet that the mithril coin route costs more in the long run). How long will it be before EVERYTHING in game requires and/or will have Mithril Coins tied to it somehow.

Which brings me to my next concern, in-game currency. With the introduction of the slot machine (aka "Hobbit Presents"), and the fact that it gives gold away like candy (I made over 20 gold just from the daily/weekly spins in just the few times I was on the test server), this is going to cause a LOT Of inflation in the game. Tack on the rumor of an AH that only uses Mithril Coins and, well, in-game currency won't be worth all that much anymore.

And I am willing to bet that if someone did the math, they would find the TP cost of purcahsing Mithril Coins to use some of the aforementioned perks runs more than the TP's it costs to buy teh same item in the store.

Is it just me or is gaming getting worse?

I think my plan to have relaxing time with game really didn't develop to the positive in the last 15 years.

I used to like pretty and dumb FPS games and deep Wargames, as in military simulations as long as they aren't a too straight representation of boardgames. I liked LOTRO, my first MMORPG.

FPS games are doing OK-ish but there are too many accidents where I pay full bucks and then don't like it. Far Cry 3 is an example. I couldn't stand the console crap and gave up quickly. And that after all the trouble of downloading, patching - and paying. I'm really not sure what to play there, I think I should just do Stalker.

Wargames have taken big hits to the community and the availability of games. Only Matrix and battlefront.com do more-than-boardgame military simulations and there just isn't a good stream of playable games out of there. Matrix is simmering on a very low flame, BFC's game are kind of schizophrenic with their (IMHO failed) attempt to go to 1:1 modeling of individual soldiers in CMx2. CMx1 can't be liberated and you just have to live with bugs and limitations.

MMORPG, well as we all see what prevents a company from going berserk? Nothing. You are in for the ride. Neither TSW nor ST:TOR could hold my attention, maybe I should give ST:O a shot?

Anyway, the details are besides the point. I am really concerned in general, because the smaller companies that make games I like have been unable or unwilling to continue to do so and many big titles jump the shark much more than they used to. I probably qualify as a software control freak, I just don't like it when a piece of software that I like is replaced with one that does worse against my will.

I always hoped to get fired and write my own wargame but even that didn't happen...
