I was once again dragging myself through the barbed wire and flames that are the LotRO forum posts and started to pick up on a theme with people who defend Turbine. I thought I'd paraphrase a few here and explain why they are just so annoying to me.

1. 'If you don't like it, don't buy it/play!'

A few of you will already see why this annoys me. This is a game I've played for a little over 4 years and these fools expect me to just throw all that time away because something is obviously wrong with an expansion that can be fixed?

2. 'The expansion is only $40!'

Sure, when you ignore tax and that it doesn't have all the RoR content included. It's like offering a full car for £1,000 but then selling another for £500 but it's missing a wheel and then saying 'the car is only £500' (pretend you can't buy a wheel anywhere else like the Legendary exclusive content).

3. 'The prices are worth it because you're helping to support LotRO!'

This one is laughable, really. It's as if the defender sees Turbine as some struggling and hardworking force worthy of such unreasonable price tags, when in reality they just seem to be throwing out the least quantity they can and putting their hands out for whatever they decide to put on it.

4. 'You're just acting like greedy kids.'

Clearly the people that post this don't remember the days of Moria. It cost me something like £20 and I got Eregion, Moria and Lothlorien, plus all the instances from all three places (I think that totals to around 12 instances (3/6 mans) and 3 raids). That was £20 for me, not even mentioning LI system, 2 new classes, a massive load of books and a physical CD. Now, it's £50 (or £30 if you want the basic, with tax). It may well be the same size in landmass as Lothlorien, Eregion and Moria combined (the days of true 3 zones, not like RoI's '3' zones), but I highly doubt it will have as many quests and there is no way on Earth they'd give as many instances and raids. So, for over double the cost, you get even less. Yet because we have standards, we're labelled as greedy kids? Good one.

Feel free to post your own 'favourites'. I know there's tons I missed, I just can't seem to remember right now.

I'd like to start by giving my thoughts on what you've posted. Here is a reference that will be useful. I think the problems you describe can be explained by logical fallacies.

1) I agree with this one completely. This a classic straw man argument. The assumption is the only reason someone complains is because they don't like something. The truth is usually either that they do like something or they want to like something but in either case, it's just not good enough and it could be improved.

2) When I see this one brought I see fallacies on both sides. Both sides are providing an incomplete comparison. Does the expansion cost $40? Yes. Does the expansion cost $70? Yes. The expansion also cost $50. Turbine have made the decision to make each version unique. The base edition is the cheapest. The heroic edition contains extra quest packs the other don't include. The legendary edition includes "exclusive rohan content" (which mean session play as a horse and 1 exclusive skill) as we as items that will be in the store. Saying, "The expansion cost $70 dollars!" is as just as much of a fallacy because the legendary editon does not include additional quest packs. I actually recommended RoI Legendary edition to a few people last simply because of the quests packs.

3) This is an appeal to pity. Turbine need our support and if we don't help fund them they have to shut this wonderful game down.  -O- This is also why I hate those ASPCA commerical. We should all send them money because, look these sad puppies and kittens.

4) Ad Hominem

As for my least favorite phrases, I'd say anything DarkCntry says. I heard if you say his name three times he magically appears.
Joe "Jwbarry" Barry: "... because there was a thread in the book to hang ourselves from..."
Sapience: "No gear is permanent. Characters 'out grow' their gear."
"We will not sell end-game gear. "
"Apparel Dummy is no more. They'll now be called Mannequins"
Orion: "Something needs to go here"

"Turbine is a business" as a reply to any complaints about pricing and value for money.

Because the only two alternatives are ripping off their customers or giving away everything for free and consequently going broke.

Lotro players don't want PvP. This is a PVE game - you can't have a game that has PVE and PVP.

There are a couple of threads filled with dumb arguments like this by people who had their feeling hurt once in some other MMO where they tried PvP.

Others:
"Lotro is a great game - no game is perfect" in response to any criticism, pointing out a game weakness, or suggestions to improve the game.

We have had much more content since F2P.

Lotro was doing fine before F2P. People were not leaving/server population was not falling.

This sort of thing is really annoying for me. The Heydts, or however it's spelt, are notorious for this. Some things I've heard anti-pvpers say:

'We don't want PvP pushing into PvE territory.'

This was said in a thread about having a seperate PvP layer across the world that you had to consciously opt in to enter, thus allowing creeps out of the Moors and keeping PvE seperate. They failed to grasp that concept.

'Why do PvPers keep wanting a new zone?'

I smiled at this. Imagine if it was the other way around, with PvPers having tons of zones and the only levelling and questing you can do was in one zone. And that was for five years straight. Pretty sure people would have asked for more zones too.

'I don't want funds/devs wasted on a minority activity.'

The Heydts say this alot. The thing is, they never give the numbers to back that sort of statement up for any other activity than PvP. For all we know, PvP numbers equal raiding numbers. Then again, they also don't want more raiding or instances made, so they pretty much oppose anything they personally don't like, regardless of the amount of people who do like it.

When talking about items in the Store.

'You don't have to have it.'

No but neither do I have to have anything, or even play it for that matter. I play for enjoyment, I hone my character for enjoyment. I don't expect to be restricted from doing that because I won't pay even more than was already asked for apparent full access in the form of VIP.

"Here is a list of reasons why it's taking so long to fix the stable/hitching problem...."

Ok, you have worked in the industry (or not, in one case), fine. Are you some sort of stalker who has a hidden camera in devs offices or something? You know 100% what's going on?

Even better when it's some bug that's taken ages to fix and they say 'oh it's difficult to deal with code' and then the minute something goes wrong with the Store, Turbine are immediately focusing on getting it back up.

"Why should Turbine make mounts account wide? It makes them money, sorry not going to happen."

In other in more plain words, why should Turbine be anything but greedy...

"I don't know what you're problem is, my kin has run Draiglitch 150,234 times in a row and he hasn't bugged. YOU are  causing the bug with how you are playing, that's the only explanation."

Gotta wonder if the devs have taken their cue from Microsoft, the originator of released-software-with-bugs-is-normal-and- expected, and the problem must lie between chair and keyboard...

"As VIP or a lifer, you get 500 tp a month -- plus tp from completing deeds!"

Yes because Turbine always prices things fairly.

"Nothing in an MMO is static; expect change!"

So what, I can't trust anything Turbine says??  You know what; that might actually be the best advice so far.

My favorite phrase?

"You get 500 FREE TP per month"!!!!

I'm still trying to figure out how paying $600 for 3 lifetime subscriptions makes those TP 'FREE'..

I'm not personal friends with any of Turbine's staff, haven't even met any of them.  I have, however, been on the development side of the fence and know when people are being rather obstinate over what happens.

Or I am smart enough to know when people won't budge from their naive views and don't waste my time.

As far as being wrong, while that does happen, it's rare when it comes to what you're trying to insinuate.

But whatever floats your boat.

So the rumours that you say his name 3 times are true. I'm disappointed with you lot that you'd bring this guy up to 'grace' us with his presence.

Back on topic, I also find the 500TP per month BS to be profoundly ignorant. Whenever a VIP says something like more and more stuff is becoming Store only and effectively putting advantage items out of reach for anyone who doesn't want to pay twice, you'll always hear some jackass say 'but you get 500TP per month'. They seem to forget that pretty much everything in the Store is so overpriced it would take years of saving to even get the bare minimum.
