Every time I try to log into my steam account after a > 6 months break it seems they locked my account. Even though I go through the "send email and enter verification code" it then refuses to take the new password.

Last time it happened I contacted support and the reset they did worked (although it looked like the same reset I could do myself, theirs worked).

However, to do this you have to have a separate steam support account, and this time around both my game account and my support account are both disabled.  I think I can actually not create a new support account for the email address in use for my steam activity.  

Is this a known phenomenon?

Well OK looks like I can re-activate my support account with a reset email and bootstrap from there. Unfortunately it'll be until Monday or so until they reset the game account.

That sucks. I haven't had that problem personally, and I take looooooooooong breaks from using Steam (like I uninstall it and forget about it for a couple of years at a time, until I need it again). Hope you get that sorted out soon.

Well one more time and I stop using them.

By it's very nature this problem does significant damage to game enjoyment because I will usually discover it Friday evening or Saturday morning when I want to play or buy a specific game on the weekend, and then I first waste parts on my weekend in their no-error-messages error process, and last time it took until Monday until somebody went through the effort of hitting their own version of a reset button.

I already prefer to buy on Amazon because of the SSD issue.

If you buy regular games you can move them on and off your SSD as you change games.

Could you move games individually with a HDD instead of an SSD then? As in, what makes this an /SSD/ issue specifically?

I don't want to buy a SSD big enough to hold all games.  So when I play a game for a while I move that one from the raid to the SSD (if it gets an advantage in loading). That doesn't work with the steam folder since it alone is larger than the SSD and even if not it would take too long to copy back and forth.

I think I could fake it by making a partial copy of the steam folder while making sure automatic updates are turned off but that's dicey.

That app should do what you want. All it does is create a junction point (similar to symbolic links on Unix-based OSes) which is something that you should learn to use if you have an SSD with Windows. A little more complicated then simply moving folders but it gets the job done.

Steam is a popular store and gaming community created by Valve (Half Life, Counter Strike, Team Fortress.) Steam is a place where I .. uh.. own more than 1500 euro of games. (Lots of indie bundles and 75% off prices.. so in reality I haven't even paid 1/4th of that. But the value of those games is over 1500 euro. Okay, Steam's usually overpriced with many of those games, but they also usually have fantastic deals with 75% off.)

You know GOG.com? Steam's more convenient than that with their client. You have a whole library of games you've bought off Steam, and can select them to download and install anytime. Then, when done, bam, go play games. Had enough? Remove them. Can reinstall later easily again. Basically, it's your games in the cloud. Even Lotro is on Steam now, muuuuuuch better to download that damn game via Steam than via Turbine's shitty Pando Media Booster, or whatever the fuck that crap is that sucks your bandwidth dry and that you gotta uninstall manually.

Right now they have a Summer Sale and I'm going to ponder whether I'm going to get the complete Civilization set.

A friend of mine just got me the Orange Box on Steam, and I've been experimenting with Half-life 2 this weekend.  I told him I appreciated it; I'm a little tired of angry demons and this seems to involve angry aliens.  He'd previously gotten me hooked on the Portal games this way.

Not had that problem before Darmokk, although I can't say I have ever taken a very long break (indeed its set to start up and log in automatically with my PC). Have you tried re-installing the Steam client? Maybe something wrong there.

The problem is on their website, too.

They just sent a support issued password reset and that one worked, so my account was definitely put into something where my own resets don't work, without any notice.

Now I have the problem that apparently there is no way to change the password on their website. WTF?

For the password stuff you have to download the client and change it in there I believe.
