Recently Turbine made a big deal about getting their players to vote for Sapience in Guild Launch's inaugural "Dragon Slayer" awards, as ol' Sap was up for "Community Manager of the Year". They even went so far as to put this in the launcher for the game, as you may recall. Well, the votes are in... Here are all of the finalists, with the winners bolded:

Quote

Notable Kickstarter of the Year:

Guns of Icarus
Ouya
Yogventures

Notable Machinima or Video Series:

Clear Skies
The Guild
Red vs Blue

Notable Gaming Comic:

Goblins (see acceptance video @ end of post)
Penny Arcade
The Daily Blink

The Hype Train Award

Final Fantasy XIV
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Guild Wars 2

Most Dramatic Change

Diablo III
League of Legends
World of Warcraft

Notable Gaming Personality

Felicia Day
Wil Wheaton
Rivington the 3rd

Top Community Management Team

CCP Games
Riot Games
Blizzard Entertainment

Most Passionate Fan Base

Lord of the Rings Online
EVE Online
World of Warcraft

Community Manager of the Year

Rick “Sapience” Heaton – Lord of the Rings Online
Jonathan “Zarhym” Brown – World of Warcraft
Sveinn “CCP Guard” Kjarval – EVE Online
Andrew “Tamat” Beegle – League of Legends

At least the LOTRO community won an award.

Boy, I'm glad Will Wheaton didn't win ;)
I share Sheldon Cooper's aversion to him!

Likewise, I'm glad the LOTRO Community won, and also that Sapience didn't. Frankly, he could do a considerably better job, so he doesn't deserve that reward.

So basically the only thing going right in LOTRO is the pissed off fanbase? :)

I don't know how other games handle things, but I think the Community Team could be doing a lot more to engage the Community. They've made some strides with the community events (i.e., the Galloping Gala) that they've been organizing since May (even there, they could do a much better job of communicating about it and engaging some of the lesser-populated servers).

Also, the community update videos are a big step forward, but now that the major Rohan news has dried up, so have the videos. Sap claimed they had to go through the ESRB has to certify any video with game footage, so they are limited in what they can do.

Overall, I think the community has grown stagnant - a state that frankly and unfortunately mirrors the game.

I look at it like this. Turbine went on this full-court press to get Sapience voted "CM of the Year", and I don't even remember them mentioning that the Community was up for an award. So all these people go the the vote-page, and vote themselves as being "Most Passionate Fan-base", and neglect to vote for Rick Heaton, for their own reasons.

Regardless, it is funny as hell!

I believe I saw him mention the Community being up for the award himself, Troll...probably on Twitter.  I'll try to chase it down tomorrow, when my poor old GW2-addled head isn't pounding.

I would hope he did mention that, since they are much more deserving than he of an award. Looks like the voters thought that way, too.

The LOTRO community certainly does seem somewhat quiet at present. Just look the the LOTRO combo blog and you'll see very little new posts. It's mainly cosmetic stuff and the usual news from the usual news out lets. There certainly doesn't seem to be any major debates or discussions going on regarding the delay to RoR.

Whether this is just a hiatus, or something more permanent remains to be seen. I have my own theory that'll I'll be blogging about soon. The demise of CoH shows that the plug can be pulled at any time and irrespective of what fans/customers want.

Look forward to seeing your post about this topic. CoH going down with such a dedicated, if small playerbase is worrisome, but I don't think Turbine would pull the plug on LOTRO right after RoR comes out. Even though it wouldn't be the first time they did something like that. They wouldn't go AC2 again, would they?

Okay, maybe this really is worrisome.

When the boardroom trumps the dev team, have no doubt that a plug can be pulled at any time.

There doesn't seem to be as many people excited about Rohan.  I'm not just talking about Lotro blogs, but from what I see online with the people I know.  It seems like a lot of the community is in a state of "Meh" right now.  Even the official forums feel pretty slow (the only passion is the vitriol being slung about regarding the festival consumables.)  People do know they don't want half-finished content so that combined with the mehness means not a lot of emotion about the delay I suppose.

Sapience is making sure the community knows it won the award.

Which in all fairness is the smart and proper thing to do.  And that is a cool statue, I'd like one on my desk as well.

From Sapience in that thread:

Quote

Usually the awards sit on the desk of whoever heads up the team that won. So Game awards usually end up on a producer's desk. This is currently sitting on my desk as it's a community award.

Oh the irony.... it's certainly not due to him the community won that award.

Maybe they should have a poll on the forum for the person that has done the most for the community and give them the award.  People could nominate someone and these that get the most nominations can be voted on in the poll.

I guess that is never going to happen
