New games engine or LOTRO 2?

Recommended Posts

This is my first mmo so don't have experience but I have heard of mmo's getting a new engine but how likely is that for LOTRO? I am thinking one that could handle multi core processors or is it more likely to be a sequel?

A new engine? About as likely as me winning the lottery without actually buying a ticket :)

It's impossible. Even with the ridiculous budget and market power Blizzard has, they're not doing a game engine upgrade but rather a graphics overhaul of some kind, IIRC. You might as well just start developing a new game from scratch.

I think Anarchy Online is getting an upgraded engine but it is the one used by AoC and Secret World already so is already developed and owned by Funcom. I seriously doubt Lotro where they don't want to even spend money on keeping a reasonable flow of content are really going to spend large amounts of money and time implementing a third party engine or creating a new one from scratch.

I have re-writes anyway. Fine with me.

Re-writing software practically never works out the way you want.

You want threading? You sit down and fix the existing codebase line by line.

Well they could release a new engine that was compatible with the old one that allowed them to have new content areas and updated player models in all areas.  But that would be like releasing a new game.
