The Random Crap Thread

Recommended Posts

Maybe the best solution is

1) to ask Doro to not try to bait Darmokk and make a ton of posts he needs to delete (don't know if this happened or not).

2) to ask Darmokk to just delete the posts he feels need it, and not to ban Doro (if Doro is not making a ton of posts to annoy Darmokk). If Darmokk feels a need to ban Doro, goto Muer instead of banning him again.

Then, if it doesn't work out, ask Muer to help with the moderation of Doro's posts. I am sure Muer can be more objective at this point and make a decision on how to solve the issue.

Anyway, sorry Doro.

Darmokk, please do not ban Doro for longer. He makes a ton of very helpful and intelligent posts. Sure there are also some quick posts with swears and other stuff - but Doro has contributed a ton to this community. Any longer post from him is usually very good - or very helpful - such as his advice or discussion on games. I see a lot of his posts as really good ones that make excellent points. We don't want to lose a long time, valuable community member like Doro.

FWIW, I never got the argument that making a post about US politics should not be allowed. I just can't see it. Do we really need forum moderation here that prevents threads going off topic? Maybe not.

well, first of all it would be nice maybe to update forum software at some point to split threads when needed (if possible)? that would be great - if off-topic takes around a page, it could be easily moved. several off-topic posts of course is not derailing…

in general the person in discussion is interesting and amusing fellow ;) his posts might seem offensive to someone however, and of course he was provoking and doing some kind of virtual performance to test the borders during the day. :) the main problem I think is with new members who do not know local customs… well, ban will end anyway. its better to discuss person in his/hers presence (if it makes sense discussing persons at all)

by the way as outlined by Lothirieth - skimming is great thing, as the greatest ignore is not the function in the forum or game, but in your brain.

back to topic. :)

I was thinking today - gold has actually exquisite conductor and protective properties (mostly against radiation), which makes it invaluable in space. So really that's its real worth, not that it's rare or looks nice?? (I personally prefer other metals in jewellery). Why then before humankind realised this we still considered gold as a valuable substance? Just the rarity?

I really love urban legends, these are a really nice form of contemporary mythology. Of course there are some rantings, that UFOs here are for gold.

That would make a nice setting for a short novel, you know, currencies are not anymore supported by gold. Gold reserves of most countries are concentrated/kept hidden/unaccessible. What if THEY are really paying some kind of ransom to aliens in gold, you know? ;) (that's really some random crap which sometimes comes to our minds…)

Doro likes to troll sometimes and post crap, he has been doing this for three years, if anyone has been here for any period of time they know this and can handle it. I don't see any need for the ban to be honest.

And please people stop comparing Darmokk to that liar lil ricky.

I gotta agree with both of these thoughts.

Maybe if a post looks like it needs its own thread, Darmokk can do a copy/paste of the post into a new thread and edit the post with a pointer to where it was moved.  And have a policy where creation of too many troll off-topic derails leads to a warning.  That would be a start, at least.

Personally, despite my dislike of the manner in which he communicates sometimes, I believe Doro isn't one to back down from a challenge, especially where he feels he's treated unfairly.  Right now, Darmokk is putting his side forward, without letting Doro the chance to answer the charge; that is something that Ricky would do.

I have brought up the matter of rules being made up on the fly, especially with regards to "thread de-railment", but Darmokk does not want to acknowledge it.  So, in the interest of proving my point, here is the complete list of forum rules:

Forum Rules

The full set be written soon (not Soon™). For now, here are some basic rules:
  • Godwin's Law - If Godwin's Law applies, the thread is over. For the purpose of this board, any comparison of a person to another person an average person definitely wouldn't want to be compared to is to be considered an invocation of Godwin's Law.
  • Rule 34 & Rule 35 - Rule 34 states: "If it exists, there is porn of it." Rule 35 states: "If no such porn exists, it will be made." While the accuracy of these laws are not contested, their subject has no place on this website. Any (soft-)pornography will be removed. So will you.
  • The Ad Hominem, Flames and Trolls - While a good strong discussion is always welcomed on a forum, it would of course be boring if everyone always agreed on everything, there are certain discussion techniques that are at the very least frowned upon. Playing a discussion on the man instead of the subject (Ad Hominem), using verbal abuse targeted at other users (flaming) or trying to incite flaming in others (trolling) shall not be tolerated. If you cannot win a discussion with arguments, agree to disagree or leave the discussion. Like Bilbo Baggins, we slay the trolls.
  • Skitt's Law - Expressed as "any post correcting an error in another post will contain at least one error itself" or "the likelihood of an error in a post is directly proportional to the embarrassment it will cause the poster." It is an online version of the proofreading truism Murphy’s Law, also known as Hartman's Law of Prescriptivist Retaliation: "any article or statement about correct grammar, punctuation, or spelling is bound to contain at least one eror". Posts about typos are extremely annoying and rude. Don't make them.
  • Copyrighted and NDA material - This applies all over the internet: do not post material you are not allowed to post. If you happen to "find" some screenshots from the latest Palantir build, keep them to yourself. If you happen to find a really cool MP3 sharing website, keep it to yourself.

Absolutely nothing in there regarding tangential or derailing posts.  If there's an oversight there, then it should be corrected and added; otherwise, off-topic posts are allowed.

Of course, Darmokk can still try to get Doro on flaming and/or trolling of himself, but he needs to deal with the reality that he pokes Doro quite a bit.  Seriously, what other response to such poking would you expect from Doro?

I just unbanned him based on an agreement along those lines.

I really don't think Muer will be easier on Doro, though. That's not gonna work out. The BS needs to stop now.

You fell victim to the propaganda that some individuals have been spamming in large amounts of posts. I have been very specific about what kind of US party politics I consider trolling and it is a very narrow band. Much narrower than the ranters made it appear. I just don't like it when derogatory terms are being used for one side of the US (US only) political spectrum bringing forward some actions of that side that are pulled out of very thin air in the first place, and go into a thread that has nothing whatsoever to do with US politics so far. For example, you can bash US politics, politicians and parties in the Israel thread all you like as long as it touches middle east politics, of which there is no shortage of material.

And they can always post the thing I objected to in a new thread, or an existing more fitting thread.

You know what?  This is primarily an European forum board, started by old Codies LOTRO players.  Folks from the US have the privilege of participating here, one which I'm very conscious of.  US bashing is to be expected at some point.  If I can poke fun at Luxembourg and not become Public Enemy #1 here, then I ought to be able to take it when someone bashes my country here, and so should you.

Thanks for the explanation Darmokk. I am not really trying to criticize you or anyone  - I think you have done a good job overall as a Mod.

Getting away from the whole who is wrong - who is right - mindset is helpful imo. Your explanation makes sense. If this type of moderation happens very rarely (related to US party bashing), I can't see it as a big deal. It might be debatable, but doesn't seem that important.

Nobody ever objected a good round of US bashing.

It's just the party lines crap that Europeans don't even understand. People need to stop dragging that into unrelated threads and then remove to take it elsewhere, thereby proving that they are trolling (they need the audience in the original thread and they know nobody is interested in their BS and nobody would visit the new thread).

Eh, online communities are great because they remove borders, and so everyone can become one big family not bound by country of origin or anything else.

I've been watching this thread for a while now and have been unbanned for the past 2 hours. However, I wanted to keep silent to see where things went...

In all honesty, I'm pleasantly surprised there's so many people voicing their concerns with that ban (if not concerned with me). It's good to see there are enough level-headed and reasonable people out there that can separate their opinion of me with their view on moderation. And thanks to those who did post to defend me. It's been duly noted.

And to lighten the mood... this video sums up how I've felt for the last 2 hours.

No, it's called the statement of an opinion, something that used to be done here.  We've gone off on tangents here for years, but you didn't seem to care until you became a mod.  Anyone can call something trolling when it makes them uncomfortable.

No, once people refuse to post it in a different thread because they need the audience of the original thread it is trolling. They force their garbage on the original thread's audience who they know will not visit a thread dedicated to their garbage.

Was pretty much only Liz that did that and that problem was rightfully taken care of. :P

The Liz case was different. He/she made a final post that betrayed the fact that this was one of the payed Russian internet trolls. Used to be more careful, then layed low for a while, then a careless post. Amateurs...

Same thing as the Syrian electronic army, but for Russia.

What, I go watch some Breaking Bad episodes and Doro is let back in?

Darmokk, you're soft as shit! Soft lad.

Maybe Doro learned it's not such a good idea to bait a Mod, but I'm not sure! ;)

Liz definitely seemed like she could be a troll who did not believe a word she said.

But surely Russia did not pay anyone to troll this site? Why would they?
