Then your point is spurious nonsense.

I'm not labeling your opinions as bigoted and unacceptable "simply because I disagree with them." I am labeling them as bigoted and unacceptable because they are poisonous, spiteful, mean-spirited, exclusionary and ill-informed. So in that way I am very mechanically and objectively pointing out a truth. This is not a case where you can spin the mirror around and go "Ah-hah!" You need the moral high ground to do that, otherwise it's just a feeble attempt at deflection.

You are especially ill-informed in your suggestion that having a gender identity that differs to your assigned sex is a "delusion," which implies you believe it to be a mental illness. This shows the level of your ignorance about transgenderism, and attitudes like yours perpetrate a huge amount of psychological damage on those to whom they are directed. It's abusive and callous behaviour and should not be accepted because of the harm it inflicts.

Moreover, your refusal to use the pronouns appropriate to an individual's gender identity on the basis that 'they are a big old meanie poopyhead' betrays an enormous amount of childish vindictiveness and cruelty on your part that I can scarcely believe you are trying to justify. Nobody deserves to be treated that way.

Yet you don't seem to care. In fact you seem to like doing it, because, I dunno, the internet or something. So at best you're an ignorant internet blowhard, and at worst you're a sadist and a bully. Take your pick, because either way it's bigotry.

Indeed I do see, and no, it doesn't work both ways. "You are the intolerant one for not tolerating my intolerance" is about the stupidest logical fallacy it is possible to encounter.

It is also the same logical fallacy that those right wing Christian nutjobs in America trot out when they want to do horrible things like deny gay or Muslim people service in their shops, ostensibly on religious grounds, in order to try to make themselves the victim in the situation.

And so I choose to believe that you are using it jokingly and are not that dense. Call me mega-polite, giving you the benefit of the doubt this way :)

OK I think I got it now.

My opinion/assessment/belief = bad.

Your opinion/assessment/belief = good.

Name calling and intolerance = bad... except...

Yes, because those two examples are exactly the same thing at exactly the same level.

Indeed.

I think you made your case quite well.

You are obviously very tolerant... when someone agrees with you.

Do transracialists (those who think they are a different race) have a mental illness? What about transpeciests (sp? those who think they are a different species)? What about transterrestials (those who think they aren't from earth)? If someone wants to be called a different name are they at least obligated to get it legally changed if they are serious about it?

More like I'm very tolerant ...when you agree with the notion that people are worthy of basic respect and human dignity, and provided they are not harming anyone should be left in peace to pursue their own happiness.

Anyone who starts espousing from any position of hostility, abuse, inequality or hatred will get the crap 'disagreed' out of them.

In the UK you can call your self anything you want, without changing you name by deed poll, as long as you are not doing it for fraudulent reasons.  So if someone wants to be called by any other name they can.

Also why cant people just accept others for who they are.  As long as they are not harming anyone what does it matter what label they use to identify themselves.  Just accept them and move on

Ah... well... that's different.

You see people often call me a dense nutjob and I misinterpret their genuine lack of hostility, abuse, inequality or hatred... particularly when added to the fact they are not harming anyone and leaving me in peace to pursue my happiness...

Your arguments are tied up in knots.

The celebration of Bruce Jenner was "A bridge to far" for the LGBT propaganda machine and there will certainly be fringe groups that will attempt to capitalize on the carefully plotted marketing campaign of the LGBT movement. Perhaps the closest group the Transgender are the Transabled. There will, no doubt, be human rights court cases where the various "Trans_____" groups will claim their legal acceptance... and their arguments will be identical to those of the Transgendered. "I don't feel my arm is a part of my "real" body. I never have. I want an amputation".

People will wake up to this con game and no amount of tolerance doublespeak will put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

You see, when I was referring to "right wing Christian nutjobs" I wasn't actually referring to all Christians. Most of them are cool. Those comments were directed very specifically towards those barely literate maniacs you see on Youtube draped in the confederate flag and stroking their assault rifles, ranting and raving about 'the gays' eroding the sanctity of marriage and destroying their religion. We've seen a lot of them since the recent supreme court decision in the US on same sex marriage, all of them getting louder and angrier.

I certainly wasn't directing those comments towards anyone here on this forum. But wow. Slippery slope fallacy and 'gay conspiracy' comments in one post? Now I'm not so sure...

I didn't say "conspiracy theory" I said "marketing campaign" but actually not far from the mark so I'll roll with it.

When I was young homosexual acts were a criminal offence in Canada as well as much, if not all, of the western world. Did it reach the point where it is now without a plan or agenda?

Just selected the first article I found and didn't read through it but this headline suits my purpose and fits my view of what happened in Indiana.

Liberal activists and big business joined forces and humbled a governor: http://time.com/3768334/indiana-gay-rights/

As for the qualifiers you now list for your determination of what constitutes a nutjob... if I were to judge from the confused nature of your posts here today I believe tomorrow, or perhaps your next post, you will be willing to cast a larger net. The group of Christians you are tolerant of will grow smaller and those you are intolerant of will grow larger... speculation on my part though.

I believe people who know me think of me as a compassionate person... but you don't know me. Regardless, I will not call what I believe to be black white and white black to make someone feel better about themselves or the choices they make. Nope... Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter"  Isaiah 5:20

These conversations never end well.  See the above if you don't believe me.  There is no one more closer to this subject than myself.  You see a friend of over 30 years is in transition from male to female.  I support his decision because it really doesn't effect me at all.  And who am I to tell him he's wrong?  Live your life how you want.

But that doesn't mean I'm going to attack those who believe the opposite.  You see in this world we have lots of different people.  Some go to church each week some don't.  Some have no problem with gays in their churches and some don't.  The beauty of America is we welcome all belief systems.

Your also allowed to disagree with those beliefs.  But where I draw the line is stereotyping.  No matter how much you disagree with a certain faction of human beings it is not OK to start categorizing them.

Confederate flag draped, assault rifle stroking, ranting and raving right wing nut jobs.   Really?  Who's the biggoted one here?  Do you even care that you just did what the people you describe and hate do?

I don't identify with those groups but I am an NRA member.  Does that instantly make me a member of your hate list?

My family has supported gay marriage since I was a young boy.  We have 2 relatives that have been in gay marriages since they made it legal is Massachusetts.  Did we start throwing fits when our family church refused to do a ceremony?  No we just joined a church that would do it.

People have to get off their high horses that their opinions and beliefs are superior to all dissenting beliefs.   And if you don't like living here in the US with people of different races, creeds, nationalities and religions well feel free to move to a place where everyone does agree with you.  Good luck finding that place.

Sorry about the rant but I can not stand by and see people get up on their pedistal and talk down to people, or stereotype them.  I'll be here stroking my Socom 1 assault rifle supporting gay marriage and transgender people draped in the American flag bitching about my taxes and not praying to any god.  Sometimes I am just sickened by society.

A personal example... kinda... the same but different. (hehe)

I posted that I went to a funeral today that was wonderful... weird eh? I also have a friend who is in surgery right now with a severely broken leg. My friend is a drug addict. He has a prescription for what I believe is the maximum dosage (80 mg) and maximum quantity (5 per day) of oxycontin. This lasts him about half a month before he starts withdrawal and seeking street sources for a very expensive drug. He also takes over a thousand Tylenol 1 pills each month that do not require a prescription. He will also take Percocet's or whatever else he an get his hands on. He has done this for many years. (he is a recent friend so this history is from what other friends have told me)

I cannot experience the pain he feels so I will not cast judgment on that. I do know a drug addict wants more drugs... an alcoholic wants another drink... a gambling addict wants to roll the dice because the next one is going to be a winner... Who am I to tell him he is wrong? I can tell you he wants nothing more than to be supported in his addiction because, as I said. I don't know the pain he is in.

So he is now in surgery and I am hoping that this hospital stay and extended rehabilitation will result in the enormous pain involved in cleaning him up. Am I cruel/hateful in wishing a friend enormous pain even beyond the pain of his injury? It would certainly be easier to let him "live your life how you want".

I really cannot fathom how people can support others in the rejection of their very physical makeup and not treat that rejection as mental illness.

Edit: I should add that I "suspect" that his broken leg was also the result of being a little too high and caused him to fall (a little too low) and break his leg... suspect because he would never admit to it.

But that doesn't mean I'm going to attack those who believe the opposite.  You see in this world we have lots of different people.  Some go to church each week some don't.  Some have no problem with gays in their churches and some don't.  The beauty of America is we welcome all belief systems.

Haha... you hit a lot of bases here.

It's late and has been an emotionally exhausting day... perhaps I'll try and compose a post explaining Christianity to y'all... yes I am the definitive source. (a little Christian joke = "I am that I am" :P )

On second thought... (hehe)

fittybolger-

Ho boy. "Willing to cast a larger net?" That's exactly that - speculation on your part. You've got to question your own stance on a subject where you've got to reference completely made-up shifting goalposts in the argument of another. To clarify, I will only "cast a larger net" if the number of Christians who seek to victimize others and deny them equal rights increases. Christians who don't do that (like, you know, the majority of them) are fine.

Quoting scripture at me trying to justify your prejudice and equating gay people with drug addicts does little to convince me you are one of the good ones.

Thequinn -

As I have pointed out, I do not refer to all Christians when using those words. I refer to a very vocal and abusive subset of them that are few in number but loud in volume. I do not pretend that all Christians are like that. But if a Christian drapes him or herself in jingoism, resorts to hyperbole about their rights as a Christian being eroded because others are given equality, rails against a 'godless' president or starts claiming that they have been 'betrayed' by their country, I'm going to go right ahead and call them and their judgmental, reactionary spiel "nutjobs." Because I can differentiate extremists from moderates. Faith is not 'one in, all in.'

I'm disappointed that I need to point the same things out, over and over.

Ah, so now not only are you claiming I'm bigoted, but you're now claiming your own views are not. Your unmoving, unwavering devotion to a principle of discrimination and your hostility towards anyone who calls you on it makes your stance all too clear. Thanks for clearing that up.

Ah, so now not only are you claiming I'm bigoted, but you're now claiming your own views are not.

That's what I've been claiming this whole time. And you've got the cheek to call others dense? But let me clear this up, because I think I've been pretty civil so far despite you being a cunt.

What you've called 'bigotry' is just an opinion you disagree with. Me believing that transgenderism is a delusion (which I'd say it is, considering you claim you are something you aren't), isn't me being intolerant to them. I'm not intolerant to other mental disorders, either. I just happen to think the treatment required is different. You think pandering to the delusion works. I don't. But, of course, you think that your opinion is superior so you can act like a bigot (intolerance to other opinions, which you're doing), and not see any irony in it.

You've tried (and failed) to compare me to 'Christian nutjobs' as some weird attempt to further discredit me. You've tried to claim I'm 'uninformed' just because I hold an opinion contrary to yours, and then try to act like that's an objective claim. In fact, your entire argument has just been 'you're being mean so now I can be mean because I'm so nice'. It's moronic. Children on a playground would be proud of your attempts.

No, my stance isn't unmoving. As you say, I used to believe that I'd follow the delusion if I respected the person (from what, 2 years ago? Nice to see you remember). That's since changed. I wouldn't follow the delusion then, either. I don't consider it to be healthy. Look up rates of suicide among post-ops. Stories of those who still aren't happy with themselves after mutilation. Acting like there's nothing wrong is just burying your head in the sand.

My 'hostility' (I genuinely laughed when I saw you pull this dick move, considering you've been nothing but hostile and I've been pretty good up until now) to you is deserved. If you want to be a cunt, you get treated like a cunt. You can't cry 'but you're psychologically harming people so it's okay', because it doesn't work that way.

And, to round this all off, if you want to get into an actual argument about the principles of transwhatever, I'd be happy too. Just drop this smug fucking attitude where you think you've got some moral superiority and I'll oblige. But if you want to keep throwing a tantrum and calling everyone who disagrees with you a bigot, sadistic, nutjob, or whatever else you can muster, then do it quietly in the corner.

Oh dear. You don't seem to understand what you're arguing any more and are now railing against behaviour you yourself have demonstrated. Now that's ironic.

More that that, you're flat out wrong. Your belief that transgenderism is a delusion is based on ...what, exactly? It's certainly not based on any objective paper or study on the subject. It is divisive rhetoric based on your own preconceptions and has no foundation in truth. Your 'belief' is ignorant of the facts, and thus you hang the rest of your argument on inaccurate information. And you use it as a means to abuse people you don't like. So yeah, you're a bigot.

Oh, and claiming your stance isn't unmoving because you've become even more intolerant is nothing to be proud of either.

Shall we end it there? I've no desire to waste even more of my time typing responses to you, and I have a feeling you think the same about me.

I agree with Hajile here, but maybe bigotry was the wrong choice in words, intolerance may be better. I actually looked up the definition, bigotry has slightly different meanings in British and American English. In the UK it's intolerance of other opinions, in the US, it's expanded on. So Doro pointing out the irony is correct.

I never said anyone couldn't call themselves anything they wish. I just wonder how obliged I am to follow along with their delusion. For example, people who call Bruce Jenner by his legal name (Bruce) should not be attacked (which they were/are) since he hasn't bothered to legally change his name (and, indeed, still has all his male parts attached to his body). At least Metta World Peace changed his name from Ron Artest.

You may think it is a delusion, but doctors dont.

People who still call her Bruce should be corrected.  People should be respectful enough to call people by the name that the person wishes to be known by, unless the name is offensive.

You certainly are not obliged to call anyone by any name, there is no obligation at all for me to call you by your name, I could choose to call you "chicken & chorizo sandwich" if I wanted (guess what I am eating right now). Surely though it is a matter of respect, I respect you and your wishes so will call you by whatever you wish to be called. If Celestrata wishes to be known as She then I am happy to call her that. I don't know who this Bruce person is but assume it is someone who wishes to go by a female name, I would be happy to respect her wishes, frankly there is no reason not to.

I've got to say this place really stays interesting ;)

I'm curious why so many people appear to be offended by other people who have a different opinion. I've probably got really different opinions about certain issues than other people here, especially on so-called ethical issues, but there is almost no opinion that would harm me; So I would probably say that I'm against and why I'm against it, and think about people "that's not good/ that's weird" but why on earth would I hate those people?

I'm a Christian and I believe Christianity is a believe of Love. Hating people is not really an aspect of love as far as I know. It's not my job to judge people's actions, that is something God will do. My job is to live like a Christian, show people how Christianity should be in my eyes and absolutaly not hate or condemn people. I can tell them I believe what they do is wrong and it's not something God will approve of, but somehow I think f.e. standing with flags near an abortion clinic saying people will surely go to hell is the way to make people change their opinion.

... frankly there is no reason not to.

Apart from the fact he's a dude, you mean? Unless female penises don't count, of course. Apparently, Bruce Jenner was a pretty famous Olympian in his day.

Names I'm not really bothered with. People at work call me Azerbaijan just because it devolved from people calling me Azza. Obviously, it doesn't now make me a country. And the same applies to people who want a female name. A big burly guy can be called Jasmine for all I care. He's not now a woman, though. Just as CaCS isn't a sandwich (I want that to stick so much).

But the issue comes in when they want incorrect pronouns applied to them. They're objectively one sex (though it's a murky area when it comes to hermaphrodites) but they're attempting to be treated as another. Just as people who want to be treated they're favourite animal, or people want to be treated as a certain race when they aren't, it's just not on the cards (for me, at least).
