Update 17 - What is it?

Recommended Posts

So I am trying to figure out what U17 will be. Someone has said it will have new Big Battles.

On this thread people are saying U17 is Minas Tirith:
https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?577920-Minas-Tirith-Pelennor-expansion-still-coming-out-this-year

I gather it was scheduled to come out this fall. I guess it has to be free, right, as an Update? What will Minas Tirith be - just a new city? I can't see Turbine putting enough time and effort into it to make it epic like in the books. Anyway, I am curious. It seems like Minas Tirith would be a good place to have a good Epic Quest line.
What do people think? From the recent leak, it sounds like just new some Big Battles - will they even release Minas Tirith and a Epic Quest chapter along with this?

Oh!, I get it... you're rping a self-important douche.  Great job! you really got in touch with the character.

I guess if you eat shit long enough you acquire a taste for it.

Eh? I've been invoked, so I appear. (This forum is still the best source of actual information about updates so I've been lurking). My assessment of Minas Tirith is similar to Warspeech's. I'll add my

Considering Turbine's current capabilities, I would expect something even better than a silly little chapter in the Epic Quest line. I would expect a visit from Bingo Boffins!

You know that DJH and Mar Evayne would be completely content with that.

What else could Minas Tirith be then a big city? ;) I guess we arrive before or after the battle of the Pelennor field, so in both cases their won't be many enemies to kill. They aren't there yet, or they are already killed. So probably help farmers harvest 10 crops of this and 5 crops of that. Help 3 people find their lost handkerchief, help 2 other people to find lost childs etc ;)

just a new city?  didn't turbine mention somewhere that minas tirith is the largest map they've done?  maybe i just haven't had my morning cuppa yet, but i'm confused with your question, the big battle takes place on the walls of minas tirith (according to the leak) so how could they do one without the other?  and has turbine ever released a major update that didn't include the epic story line?

Imagine turbine still had the money and the moria developers ... Minas Tirith would be mindblowing.

It might look good but I'd wonder how much quest-type content there could be in Minas Tirith. Even if they had the people, hard to justify spending tons of money on a relatively safe city. Sure, outside the city is scary for a couple days and maybe a few orcs sneak in somewhere for fun but I'm not sure where you could go with it.

Aloha reputation grind ;)

The very design on this iconic landmark presents an opportunity like no other to redefine rep grind by extending it to truly epic proportions. It's literally tiered up and "gated" on each one.

Poor Minas Tirith, how I hoped to see you one day as a crowning jewel of an expansion, with details within details within historical details. And now you'll be just another quest hub. It was certainly a telling sign a year ago when the devs and/or Frelorn emphatically tried to downplay the size of this city (in a livestream I think? when someone asked about MT) reminding not to expect anything big or grandiose.

This is my thinking.  All seven lvls of the white city gated by rep and the good rewards at the top.

Just think of the opportunities a location such as Minas Tirith gives to Turbine's top quest designers - a paradigm shift that takes fetching and carrying stuff up and down 7 levels to a whole new level of tedium that makes the Stonedeans arc in HD seem fun in comparison. I can foresee the reviews on the OF:

Nymphonic : Freakin' Awesome!

Marv-V : Well done, Turbine! Another winner!

etc...

I wonder if we'll get a bunch of those Dol Amroth-type deeds with randomly-bestowed quests that involve doing stuff on each of the seven levels, for rep or a new kind of currency.

Maybe they'll bring back the Hytbold hobby-horse race, this time you have to make it to the top level before the timer runs out.

Please, please, please, no fishing quests!

It appears that the only thing Nymph didn't find freaking awesome was his experience with the Player Council.  It's literally the first time I have seen him complain about anything other than the in game music changing while in combat.

Yeah I'm guessing all solo questing for MT.  Reputation grinds as others have noted.  With rep tokens given in a random gift box that is awarded by something that looks like this:

8370772707_6e0b6d13e2.jpg

Might as well stop hiding the illusion that this is how they have been handing out rewards for a long time now.  Just go full casino.

Possibly a 6 man instance that penalizes all ranged dps by making ranged skills useless against the last boss.  4/6 need 2 champs.  Get ready for that uproar.  The same folks that called melee dps crybabies will now feel the hit.  Of course none of it will be intentional by turbine, just their usual level of "quality".   Not sure what kind of gear they could make you grind out?  Maybe they could give out the new pet the living white tree.  Or maybe just MT cosmetics.   Whatever it is it won't be bringing back the old Lotro vets that some people have been predicting would return with server mergers.

Nah, probably an instance where the boss can only be damaged by warden dps and mini heals.  This will essentially remove the need for all the other classes freeing up a lot of dev money.

My personal opinion is Nymp got his eyes opened to what the other side goes through from his time on PC2014.  I don't think it'd be fair to impy he's an apologist or one of those militant causals anymore.  I honestly think at this point he's got the game in a perspective that as long as it's working, he just doesn't care anymore what's offered or not.

Yeah - it was more of a caricature of his favourite forum phrase though you're right in that he was disappointed by his experience on PC14. He and I exchanged a couple of PMs about getting a reset button added to the AH gui - so as to clear down any search criteria - one would have thought that those sort of QoL suggestions would be what Turbine wanted from the PC.

Nymphonic was posting as a fanboy in the worst way for so many years - dismissing any complaints or requests for Turbine to fix things. The only thing I see that has changed is that he now will often say the game is not perfect. But I don't see his tone changing much. He doesn't seem to post as much in the last year though. I am sure he did learn a lot on the council.

Update 17 coming to Bullroarer this weekend:

https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?573104-World-Transfers&p=7451853#post7451853

"Character Copies to Bullroarer for all Worlds

Hi all,

Just a quick note to try and clarify confusion. We are starting Beta testing for Update 17 this weekend. That means at some point today Character COPY from all servers will be enabled in the Transfer Wizard. This means that you will see all worlds in the Source World window, but if your world is not yet open for transfers, you will only see an option to Copy to Palantir (our invite only Alpha world) and Bullroarer (our Open Beta world). This is working as intended. If you want to help out with the Open Beta, feel free to copy a character over. More details on what is being tested and how to download the client can be found in the Bullroarer forums

https://www.lotro.com/forums/forumdi...Test-Server%29

Thank you,

Vyvyanne"

No patch notes yet, but I've got the client updating now.

Update 17 Beta 1 Release Notes & Known Issues - PRELIMINARY AND NON-FINAL - BULLROARER ONLY

The following release notes are for the Bullroarer public test server only and may not reflect the final list of changes or updates included at release.

These notes are not final and should be viewed as a work in progress and subject to change.

The Eyes and Guard Tavern is now open!
Your live characters may be copied to Bullroarer. In your normal game launcher, access the transfer service, select your server, select characters, select copy to Bullroarer. Copies via the transfer service CANNOT currently be accessed from the Bullroarer launcher.

Important Note: Please be aware that the build you are seeing here is a work in progress and is by no means the finished Update 17 product. There are items that are not yet complete. There may also be items missing from this initial list, this is not intentional and will be added as we progress.

:

  1. German and French localization for this beta build is missing in many many places.
  2. The Epic book quests are not available during this open beta.

  4. In the Epic Battle: Defence of Minas Tirith, the secondary quest "Despair in the Streets" is not fully implemented, and the portcullis doors currently interfere with soldier movement. Additionally, difficulty balance is not complete for the epic battles.
  5. In Minas Tirith, Bergil's quests are not completable.
