How are the 2 new mobile games from Turbine shaping up?

Recommended Posts

i had a tingle of curiosity this afternoon about how the 2 new mobile games from Turbine shaping up, so i had a look-see...  it is still rather hard to tell.

here is a look at the android app beta footage for the first, Batman Arkham Underworld, from August of last year:

and the beta forums for the above...  https://forums.arkhamunderworld.com/index.php

i have no clue how this fairs at the moment, as mobile isn't remotely my platform of choice.  a slow paced, "Hotline Miami-esque" game on a mobile device, set to Batman...  i wonder how it will do?

i'm not up on tracking things for mobile, but from my novice cursory search, it seems like this game has been downloaded to test just slightly North of 10,000 times.  no clue if that is good, as i've never looked at the stats for other market successes on mobile platforms.

& for the second game, the "Game of Thrones" themed mobile...  this one is still un-named & Turbine is hiring production type folk:

https://www.warnerbroscareers.com/search-jobs/?150689BR

https://www.glassdoor.ca/Job/Turbine-Jobs-E34765.htm

so i really couldn't say how these 2 titles are shaping up.  :?

anyone else have some insight?

well here is what roughly 9 months of development padding looks like:

for those who want more data on interest, downloads, etc. : https://www.mobileaction.co/app/ios/au/batman-arkham-underworld/960120322

based on the comment section of the youtube channel for all Batman Arkham titles, the reception doesn't seem very good.

something tells me this title (Batman Arkham Underworld) isn't going to do well.

also still no new info on the name of the Game of Thrones title, but Turbine is advertising it as coming soon on their home page:

http://www.turbine.com/

Quote

CONQUER WESTEROS!

Game of Thrones: Conquest

Prove the wit of your spies and the might of your forces on the battlefield as you extend your dominance across the seven Kingdoms in your quest to take the Iron Throne.

Coming Soon!

which is quite odd as the description looks oddly like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.GoTConquest.AndroidUI&hl=en

but GoTConquest is made by Yann Badoual & i am fairly certain he doesn't work for Turbine...

i wonder how name trademarking is coming along?  ;)

anyway, thought i'd bump this with recent news and more statements regarding Turbines Future as a mobile development studio.

IF they have any sense they will not release anything till the Pokemon Go hype dies down which wont be any time soon.  That game is making a killing (and only a matter of time till it kills someone) just now and trying to compete with that is a bad idea

Mobile market is brutal and oversaturated.

Huge hits like Pokemon GO and few others suck out almost all money from the market leaving hordes of other games fighting over scraps.

Similar situation like in MOBA games where League of Legends, Dota 2 and Smite get almost every dollar spent there.

Players have a tendency to play only most well known titles.  Especially in F2P and Mobile gaming spheres.

I've had two emails from T. about the Batman game; there's nothing even remotely interesting to me about it.  They'll probably be pushing it to try to get as much traffic from the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, but I doubt that it'll do well.

Pokemon Go almost deserves a thread of its own, up until now the big mobile titles have been Candy Crush, Angry Birds & Clash of Clans.  there has recently been that Arnold Schwarzenegger Mobile Strike as well, but essentially they have all been some rip off version of the above.

i don't know that delaying Batman Arkham Underworld will benefit or hurt as it is a completely different offering than all the above; IMO lesser as well.

Pokemon Go is like the Next Gen of Mobile in a way & yes it is doing VERY well.  just released in Canada & just yesterday i had a meal & after coffee down near First Beach here in Vancouver.  weather was stellar, so i decided to walk home taking the scenic route along the water past sunset beach & into the downtown core.  i saw no less than 50 people playing, some solo, some couples & even a small group or 2 of around a half dozen.  was pretty funny to witness.

this is pretty crazy:

& yeah just a tad silly:

i can see how from marketing to businesses, to draw in people to a location, it might be very lucrative.  & depending on the time of day, or location, dangerous as well.

I predict that these 2 games will enjoy 'Infinite Crisis levels of success'.

they haven't blown a massive budget on conventions, & the game itself wasn't programmer intensive, or at least it shouldn't have been.  biggest budget probably went into the voice work they've added recently.  so from an expense perspective, one would hope they haven't spent another small fortune. but as far as actual players, & more importantly spenders...  you can see by the second video especially, the game hits you over the head with micro-transaction shortcuts, etc.  honestly, i just can't see any significant numbers jumping on this, especially with other Batman mobile games available.

Turbine may not have spent remotely what they did on Infinite Crisis, but i don't think they'll hook enough spenders as pay-ups in games like this depend heavily on social rankings & you need to hook in numbers like Candy Crush for that to work.

yeah, i think i have seen enough data, this one looks to be another failure for Turbine.

& now with a new experience of Pokemon Go, the appeal of older titles is diminishing.  CandyCrush was seeing shrinkage the past couple years.  formerly owned by King, they had sort of burned the franchise out, as it had pretty much plateaued.   will be interesting to see what BLIZZARD has in store to re-invigorate the property in the future, as IMO King had milked it dry.

& indeed there are so many knock-offs & redundant ideas in mobile gaming, i would already describe the "CandyCrush - AngryBird - Clash of Clans" mobile types as the "Old Mobile Market."  Pokemon go is the "next gen of mobile" & i very much doubt either of Turbines 2 latest have anything "New" to offer beyond the namesakes.  & in a saturated market of similar concepts, i don't think that will be remotely enough.

it isn't named well to tie into Suicide Squad; Batman: Arkham Underworld.

frankly, if Batman Arkham Underworld & the yet confirmed Game of Thrones: Conquest don't perform well...  that will likely be it for Turbine.  Warner has already farmed out (PoS) services to 3rd. parties & can shuffle anything they want to keep a grip on, to other studios under their Corp. umbrella.

All it really needs is an add prior to Suicide Squad providing some buzz for the game, and the link will be complete.

That would provide enough traffic, in addition to anyone that wants to look into a mobile Batman title.

that is likely a hefty price tag...  and to make it specific to a showing, the price goes up.

only mobile game ad i've ever seen in a theater showing was:

so far this appears to be the only promo short enough in time length for BAU:

so far i haven't seen any material that i would say worthy to spend on pre-show advertising in Theaters.

anyway, since Batman:Arkham Underworlds launch on July 14...  here are early sales/download estimates:

rather than make a brand new topic, i just thought i'd update this old thread.

so while no one was looking, myself include...  just before Game of Thrones Conquest Launched on October 4 2017...  Turbine shuttered Batman Arkham Underworld.   & in November of 2018, Warner Bros changed the Turbine moniker to Warner Bros. Games: Boston.  so Turbine is gonzo & the re-dubbed studio is host to the one mobile game.

that one game is doing OK though is top 20 on GOOGLE PLAY grossing games.

but it is not without controversy:          https://www.gameofthronesconquestlawsuit.com/          seems there may be a lot of unhappy folk out there...  plenty of bad youtube plays as well,  but tis mobile so what one would expect.  ;)

with the last season about to air (6 episodes and it is over)  this title has a bit more shelf life anyway.

thought it was interesting that Warner ditched the Turbine name & that that first mobile is already shit-canned.  & now you all know as well. ;)
