Tarantula
I am in the process of selecting a new laptop and keep finding comments about noisy fans. Fans running while gaming is normal. Fans being loud without much going on, not so much. Are all ASUS gaming laptops loud? What about coil whine? I am looking at: https://www.staples.ca/en/MSI-Apache-GE62-7RD-471CA-15-6-Gaming-Laptop-2-8-GHz-Core-i7-7700HQ-1-TB-HDD-256-GB-SSD-16-GB-RAM-GeForce-GTX-1050-Win10/product_2681663_1-CA_1_20001 because of the i7-7700HQ other options: https://www.staples.ca/en/msi-leopard-gp73-8rd-040ca-17-3-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-8750h-1tb-hdd-256-gb-ssd-16-gb-ddr-iv-nvidia-geforce-gtx1050ti/product_2868627_1-CA_1_20001#/writeReviewButton https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_577_1198&item_id=131250 https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/asus-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-8750h-1tb-hdd-256gb-ssd-16gb-ram-nvidia-gtx1060-windows-10/12853494.aspx? Almagnus1
So yeah, you can get a gaming laptop... but the biggest problem they have is that they don't have the space to properly do a quiet cooling solution like a desktop. And honestly, don't buy from the stores unless you can get a good deal, but it straight from the manufacturer as you are able to (usually) get a better warranty that will often include accident protection (so when you spill a cup of coffee on the laptop you're not screwed). Doro
No idea if this works for laptops, but my PC has fan-control software. I've set a curve so that fans are on a minimum and practically silent while nothing's going on (and temperatures are low), but the minute it starts getting up to about 60 celsius they start speeding up and get louder, to prevent any damage. The problem I've found with my partner's MacBook is that it can get hot over pretty much nothing just because of how bad the airflow is for them, so she has to prop it up on a thick book to try to get the vents exposed, which I'm guessing would be the same for most laptops. It's the downside of trying to pack everything in to a small space.
warspeech
I've got my gaming laptop propped up on one of those wire cooling racks you use for cookies to help with air circulation.
Tarantula
Thank you for all your feedback. My older pc still runs like a charm, but laptop gave out. Good idea to go manufacturer route. Wire cooling rack or a cooling pad. Nice to still be in pre-purchase phase
The MMO Troll
My wife uses my 2+ year old Asus gaming laptop, and I'm using a one year old MSI laptop. Both of which are relatively quiet (compared to some gaming laptops), but mine can go full-on Jet Mode, if it is pushed too far. I generally use it to livestream LOTRO and other such games, though, and that does not tax it enough to turn on the afterburners. This means I'm simultaneously running: OBS (to run livestream) FaceRig (software to mask my face on stream with animated character) Chatty (chat-control software) LOTRO (duh) Discord (to allow others to join my stream over audio) ... and with all that running, plus the usual sundry background stuff, it does just fine. So yes, you can get gaming laptops that aren't loud as hell, they are just few and far between.
Smitty
My ASUS laptop runs pretty quietly by itself, but it also runs really hot, so I add an external Opolar cooler, which does a good job with reducing temps but is really loud. It's a bit of a no-win. I'm still waiting for the day that gaming laptop manufacturers actually invest in proper cooling and noise reduction. Asus did have a ROG that employed a detachable water cooling unit. Ah, yes... Here it is. The thing is a monster, and I believe they discontinued it because, seriously, who would want that monster?!
