Planetside Arena seems DOA, what does this mean for Daybreak Games?

Recommended Posts

Planetside Arena

the battle arena genre sure has tapped out.

both PUGB & Fortnite are in decline, as is the whole battle arena genre it would seem.

this is Daybreak Games early access for Planetside Arena, but even before official launch, this has all the appearances of being Dead On Arrival.

the early numbers looks to be drawing on Daybreaks Games internal pool of people who play all their titles.  beyond that, quite literally nothing.

so now that Planetside Arena seems to be a big fat dud...  what does this mean for Daybreak Games on the whole?

i predict more bad news in the near future.

Z1 has completely crashed.

EverQuest plugs along slowly.

EverQuest 2 fairs even worse.

DCU Online has numbers similar to LOTRO.

only Planetside has daily numbers that are OK.  nothing stellar, but OK.

welp that didn't take very long...

https://massivelyop.com/2019/10/11/it-looks-like-daybreaks-been-hit-with-yet-another-round-of-layoffs/

according to the employee tweets, there is likely more to come...  SOON™

this coincidentally has nothing to do with Olive Yew (& others)...

https://twitter.com/OliveYewX3/status/1179854417295745024

so Planetside Arena was Daybreaks last hurrah...  what possible plans could they have beyond this?  with 1.5 - 2 billion in Columbus Nova assets frozen & Patrick Soon-Shiongs' NantTech investment money all but drying up... what does 2020 actually have in store for Daybreak Games?

ima go with a big fat goose egg.  or a #Daybreak Games is over party.

realignment of the company into separate franchise teams...

https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/352106/Report_Daybreak_Games_lays_off_multiple_employees.php

seen chatter of folk speculating things are being parceled up separately for sale, though how that works with IP's transferring (in most cases incompletely) i can't see that being too successful TBH.

smells more like fudging the books in hopes of further obfuscating the money trail.

that and all the backbone issues this will cause as they decentralize their company services...  2020 is gonna get nasty.

the allusion to new games...  l o o o o l.

the new game will be a Gacha Game called "When Pigs Fly" available on all platforms.  🤪

Was this the money trail that led back to some corrupt Russian oligarchs? I can't keep track of it any more.

A Daybreak representative has confirmed to Gamasutra that it has laid off multiple employees in a company "realignment." The statement reads as follows:

"We are taking steps to improve our business and to support our long-term vision for the existing franchises and development of new games. This will include a realignment of the company into separate franchise teams, which will allow us to highlight their expertise, better showcase the games they work on, and ultimately provide tailored experiences for our players. Unfortunately, some employees were impacted by this effort, and we’re doing what we can to support them during this challenging time."

Does this in part explain why SSG has now for this last year been on a rampage to monetize everything?

Will DBG as a publisher go under?

Is the SSG monetization hard push to show profit numbers to solicit a new publisher?

Is SSG's recent monetization schemes their "Thanks for all the fishes"?

I can see these questions floating around in SSG's realm and with good reason.

Wouldn't that be a blessing for gaming in general now...

I have serious doubts (though no proof whatsoever) about SSG as an independent entity beyond a DBG front with some kind of WB involvement. I suspect that, should DBG go down, SSG would practically cease to exist.
