An expansion too far? Lootboxes and gear in Minas Morgul

Recommended Posts

https://massivelyop.com/2019/10/31/lotros-minas-morgul-lockboxes-are-raising-community-concerns/

October 31, 2019 11:30 AM

Ever since SSG increased its use and contents with the Mordor expansion, LOTRO’s lockboxes have been a sore point among players who have heavily criticized the feature. This situation might be getting uglier with next week’s Minas Morgul release, as the latest lockbox offerings look to be leaning more on the pay-to-win-by-chance side of things.

Of particular concern among Minas Morgul beta testers is the presence lockbox gear that allegedly has better stats then the first two tiers of the new instance boss drops, as well as choose-your-own essences that are more convenient than the landscape RNG variety. In short, these lockboxes can help some players pay to shortcut endgame progression and gearing. Various potions that are included have raised red flags, although SSG did say that it would look into the values of these.

Some players are asking for a further delay of the expansion to allow for more testing and balance refinement for lockboxes, classes, and content. It should be noted that the new zones and stories are getting some praise here, as well as an overhaul to the daily “Hobbit presents” panel, which now looks spiffier and hands out virtue XP.

I would say I need to dust off my broken record of "but the whales will still keep paying", but at this point it doesn't sit around for long enough to gather dust.

It's the broken record that keeps on skipping over and over and over...People have the game they deserve.

This is so true. Even the writer for the article plays a role. Justin Olivetti just won't do what is needed to show the true picture of LotRO. The game is in horrid condition and SSG just pumps out new unfinished trash like its a golden globe award. Massively almost never approaches sting level when it comes to LotRO. Even in this article he ends it with something to ease SSG of the welt they deserve.

I read Justin's articles about his game time in Legends of Aria. The guy is so risk adverse, after he was killed once by another player, he went about in a naked adventure. He didn't have much good to say about the pvp sandbox based on UO cause the noob died. Instead of using the death as a learning experience, he capitulated to being a dumbass adopting a, I can't lose anything if I don't have anything rationale. Because Justin is a LotRO festival idiot, he gave LoA a not so great impression to Massively's readers. It was at this point, I told myself this guy is not worth reading anymore.

Praise by starving morons who will eat what ever SSG will shovel down their throats. Hobbit Present overhaul further segregated F2P and VIP by eliminating several useful items to the F2P crowd. Another ahem, to prompt cash spending. All Olivetti can say about it is, it looks spiffier. At the end of the day, Olivetti does LotRO no favors.

Show it to whom?  The only people that would care are already playing Lotro.  We know the "truth" wouldn't change their opinion.  Lotro isn't attracting new players.  At most veterans might return occasionally, but god help them if the impending mmo is any good.

Those loyal fans allowed it to happen at the first place, they silenced any sort of criticize opinion.

They said they are happy to give turbine/ssg money cause they want to support the game they love.

And in the mean time they keep giving away money for getting more of the same, there are no new fun mechanics the quests are still the same as they were at 2007.

Even this "want to support the game" shit is just their way of self justifying their paying to get by, paying to get ahead.  Cheaters. Ones who play for hours utterly clueless and watch other pass them by.

Any of these gaming sites are going to be severely limited in how much of each game they can play just because they have so many to cover. Lotro early game is built to suck you in. Least it was, their hands are in your pockets rummaging around earlier and earlier these days.  But you won't get the dev interview exclusives if you bash every game. I rather get on a game's forum to size it up.

However I still play without spending a dime and my refusal to pay any more means I'm in the habit of not paying for a game and not looking for something else to play, and have to pay for.

Almost since launch, this company has failed to recognize that, given the IP, they are basically guaranteed money. Consequently, there's no reason to ignore player feedback or make this Lord of the Casino Online. But this is what they've done and continue to do. I've never seen a company so hostile toward its player-base and oblivious to its game's problems (although I hear ArenaNet is catching up to them).

The question is, why do you still play?

It's free. A new game and I'd have to be sociable to people. And I'd like to witness it's saving or demise first hand.

None of what they have, free or not, isn't enough to keep me around. Soon as the expansion date is firmly set, my time ends the evening before.

Same here. I've got a lifetime account and I still can't find a reason to play it. It's been uninstalled since about May or June. The sad thing is that because of the way LotRO turned out, I can't bring myself to devote time to any other MMOs, regardless of their content quality currently. I can't trust there won't be some malicious, greedy, and/or retarded dev that could come along and fuck it all up, just like LotRO.

On a slight tangent, it seems to be the same with FPS games lately. With Overwatch 2 announced, it reminded me of things like CS:S being dropped for CS:GO (along with the addition of shit like selling skins, which is retarded), or CoD getting exactly the same game released every few months but with another big price tag on it. Developers dropping their existing popular FPS lobby games for the sake of a "new" one, just to get sales. It's one of the many reasons I feel like I've dropped all the shit overpriced modern games and just returned to old classics. They don't let me down.

A while back I loaded a Space Invaders emulator. Hadn't played in 20 years but still had the knack from many 10p in the slot. Well I kept that first game going for a couple of hours getting more lives and looping around again. But my fingers and hands started to cease up and I was crippled for days. I might dig out lemmings, that was an achievement finishing that.

I'm 28, so luckily the old classics for me came out in the late 90s/early 00s. Just before companies started realising they could rip people off (except Pokemon, and Sims, both of those were terrible for that).

There are one or two threads where folks are venting their disappointment.  The only issue...SSG isn't doing anything they haven't done before (i.e. Mordor).

All this anger over something that isn't going to change.  SSG already showed you who they are--years ago.  If you continue to stick around and play the game, you have no one to blame but yourself.

This. But in order to do that you need to take 2 steps backwards and look at the bigger picture, then you soon realise that the same thing is happening over and over again; SSG screwing you over and you being angry and frustrated as a result. It's like you're stuck in a time loop because every year it's more of the same.

Again, and again and lol again. Did I mention its happening again?

https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?676410-The-new-Minas-Morgul-Instances-are-only-available-at-Tier-1-for-launch-Tiers-2-and-3-will-be-available-soon

Here is a post on top of fourth page.

Now the pitch fork is out...

I can trade for ember boxes min lvl 121 and get better gear than anything from playing the content.

Not in line with the previous commitments made.

Dissapointed is an understatement

It took this post above to get SSG to respond.

https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?676410-The-new-Minas-Morgul-Instances-are-only-available-at-Tier-1-for-launch-Tiers-2-and-3-will-be-available-soon&p=7970991#post7970991

Cordovan says here.

This is the result of T2 and T3 not being ready for a few days yet. However, this gear should soon find itself properly placed by later this week, when T2 and T3 are live.

Then

What happen to brand new gear should NOT be earned for real money on release????

You linked to your own policy lol : "On the day that new content is released, players should not be able to get the brand-new gear with end game currency or Store purchases." This shouldnt apply or what?

SSG Cordovan response below.

https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?676410-The-new-Minas-Morgul-Instances-are-only-available-at-Tier-1-for-launch-Tiers-2-and-3-will-be-available-soon&p=7971208#post7971208

Ultimately we had to decide if this was worth delaying the expansion by a couple of days for, and made the decision to keep on schedule, since the fix would be out within about 48 hours of launch. But yes, we do take this statement seriously.

"We"? I started a post asking who the "we" is. I deleted it, because I knew, it would go unanswered. Currently lootbox gear is better than anything to be had in game. This is because the players are being spoon fed the content through a trickle one drop at a time. I expected that tbh. Anything to stretch the butter as far as possible across the last piece of toast. The kicker here is a key will get you the best gear in game for the moment. Again Turbine/SSG gives a small portion of the players a boon and again hiding it behind and oopsie. I gotta call bullshit! These aren't mistakes. They do this at each release. No SSG doesn't take ther policy seriously. They use their rules and policies when its to their benefit and only then. Other times its a. "Aww we made a mistake. Sorry guys." Anything to sell those fuckin keys.

I stopped playing and just for reasons like this post. I haven't brought up the launcher and couldn't give two fucks, other than to affirm here the reason, I quit LotRO. One big shit show, who pander to dimwits, all the while shoveling shit down their throats and having those very dumbasses ask for more. _O-

I get the impression that SSG_RedPanda might have a sales target or he's out. He's jumping on anything that effects his additions to the xpac.

First we get Maxed out ILI for the valar boost in Beta, but the old bait and switch to make it all but empty on legacies for release.

We get the late addition of these craft bag after the sale started. And today the ability to take a second craft guild to maybe remind folk how super duper this bag might be. But with completely missing the ball on what players want from the craft guild and just increasing the craft grief another couple of steps.

Literally there are so many reasons to have delayed this release but it just never enters their mind or they can't tell the boss or have the option to ask for more time. A day or two actually doing comprehensive release notes would have helped.

Enjoying the final Black Book, can't do anything else atm. Can just hope it's back to free Epic Books after this...

And to make the circle jerk of incompetence complete, they forgot to even add it into the patch notes.  That is a major change to the crafting system and it goes under the radar until someone points it out to Cordovan.

As for the BiS gear dropping in lootboxes at launch, anyone thinking this wasn't a deliberate, desperate cash grab tactic (despite Cordovan's transparent excuse) has lost touch with reality.  Again, this is typical SSG tactics.  The fact that it was only a day or two ago that a blue name posted that what happened would "never happen"...why anyone continues to play this game is lost on me.

The rewards for the new Black book of Mordor quest have bound to account rewards. The first few have no level requirements.

Here's some discourse with a GM on my level 81 hunter wearing the armour, all stats effected at max, even orc-craft at 50% mit.

### Chat Capture: IMs_+Diplodocus 11/08 02:57 PM ###
[14:53] Deleah: please ID my armour, game breaker
[14:53] +Diplodocus: oh lol
[14:53] +Diplodocus: That's quite funny
[14:53] Deleah: not so much no
[14:54] +Diplodocus: I'm just taking a picture of your character now and sending it to QA
[14:54] Deleah: at least we can blame Mol finally
[14:54] Deleah: now do you want to spar me?
